An English-Cambodian (Khmer) phrasebook intended to help anyone who is visiting Cambodia to start learning the local language. It includes phrases and vocabulary to do with greetings, family, jobs, numbers, food, shopping, accommodation, transport, and illness. There are also notes on pronunciation, grammar, formality and sentence structure, plus lists of common verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions and conjunctions.

This is a unique learning aid for making rapid headway in the acquisition of comprehension and speaking ability in Khmer, the language of Cambodia. In recent years, Cambodia has moved from a society menaced by war to a society orientated to commerce. With this shift in attention from military to social and economic matters has come an increase in the numbers of foreign visitors and residents in the country for the purposes of tourism, aid work or investment-related activities. Many of these foreigners or 'chun bor-tay' speak English as a first or second language, but know little of written or spoken Khmer.

"The New Oxford Picture Dictionary" and its components provide a complete, four-skills language development program. The program is: practical - a wide range of topics introduce new words in their most common context; easy to use - vocabulary items are presented without ambiguity or the need for translation; versatile - the Dictionary itself and its components have unlimited applications; and flexible - the Dictionary can be used alone or with its components.

This volume consists of four parts: (1) The Cambodian Writing System, a formal description of the relationship between the writing system and the phonology of the language; (2) Programmed Reading Exercises, a series of highly structured reading drills to train the student to read all regular Cambodian word shapes; (3) Beginning Cambodian Reader, fifty reading selections, graded in length and difficulty, ranging from short, simple narratives to essays on various aspects of Cambodian culture; and (4) Cambodian-English Glossary, containing some 2,000 words.

Originally published in 1968 and here reprinted with corrections, this complete introduction to spoken and written Cambodian can also be used as a comprehensive guide to grammar and usage. It includes a phonetic description of the language's sounds, for those with phonetic training, and for others, a series of comparisons with English and French. Gathered chiefly in Cambodia, the material can be followed entirely in transcription, or worked through in the orthography, and includes exercises and a full vocabulary.

This is a continuation of our Khmer Volume 1 language learning course. Khmer is the official language of Cambodia and is spoken by over 85% of the population. The aim of this volume is to provide the student with a thorough command of the basic structures of standard spoken Cambodian. The course is based on the audio-oral method of language teaching developed by the Intensive Language Program of the American Council of Learned Societies and used successfully during World War II, but modified to take into account advances in language teaching techniques since that time.

This work is reissued as an aid not only to students of the Cambodian language but also to Cambodians residing in English-speaking countries. The glossary includes some 10,000 words, with definitions that are useful and complete at a general level, beyond the specific context of the published readings that the glossary was originally designed to accompany. Although less comprehensive than a dictionary, it fills an important purpose as an inexpensive aid for speakers of either language.
